01 / The story

Behind the dust.

In July 2022, our team visited Pingxiang, a coal-mining city in Jiangxi, China. Through field research and interviews, we documented the everyday realities and challenges of people living with pneumoconiosis. We connected with local NGOs and rehabilitation centers, and interviewed patients and their families to better understand their experiences and support needs.

The film explores the pressures facing patients and their families, as well as the support available to an underserved community whose experiences too often go unheard.

Pneumoconiosis is a group of lung diseases caused by inhaling certain types of dust, often at work. Dust such as coal or silica can scar the lungs and impair breathing.

Following the project, our team raised RMB 120,000 (approximately US$17,800) in donations and used the funds to purchase winter supplies for people living with pneumoconiosis.

USD equivalent is illustrative, using the 2022 annual average of RMB 6.730 per US$1; it is not an actual currency conversion. Exchange-rate source ↗
